Hwange Colliery Donates 75 Mobile Science Labs to Boost STEM Learning

Hwange Colliery Company Limited has donated 75 mobile science laboratories to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in a move aimed at improving STEM pass rates in Matabeleland North.

Education Minister Torerai Moyo said the donation comes at a crucial time as government works to address long-standing gaps in science infrastructure across the province.

Many schools, especially in remote areas, lack proper laboratory facilities, limiting students’ ability to conduct practical lessons.

“This timely intervention comes at a critical juncture,” Moyo said. “These mobile labs will bridge the gap, bringing practical science learning directly to schools — especially in remote and underserved communities. This is a game-changer for learners and educators alike.”

Moyo also extended appreciation to STEM advocate Sicelo Dube, popularly known as The STEM Lady, for her continued efforts in promoting science education and inspiring girls to pursue STEM careers. He said her work has had a “profound impact” on learners.

The minister said the initiative demonstrates strong collaboration between government, the private sector and civil society.

“This partnership exemplifies the spirit of collaborative development under NDS1 and now NDS2,” he said. “Together, we are laying the foundation for a future where every Zimbabwean child has access to quality education and the tools to innovate, compete and thrive.”

The mobile labs are expected to expand access to practical science learning and improve pass rates in subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology.
