Zimbabwe recorded 374 new dysentery cases during the week ending 12 October 2025, with no deaths reported, according to the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s latest Weekly Disease Surveillance Report.
Mashonaland West recorded the highest number of cases at 99, followed by Mashonaland Central with 74. Other provinces reported fewer cases, contributing to a cumulative national total of 13,353 dysentery cases and five deaths since the beginning of the year.
“We are closely monitoring the situation across all provinces, particularly in areas where water and sanitation challenges persist,” the Ministry said. “Our provincial teams are working with local authorities to strengthen community health education and ensure prompt case management.”

Dysentery, an intestinal infection that causes severe diarrhoea with blood, is commonly linked to poor hygiene and contaminated water sources.
The Ministry urged the public to adopt preventive measures, including maintaining personal hygiene, treating water before use, and seeking medical attention early.
“The public is advised to practice safe hygiene, use clean water for drinking and food preparation, and report suspected cases immediately to the nearest health facility,” the Ministry added.
Despite the rise in infections, the Ministry confirmed that no dysentery-related deaths were recorded during the reporting week.
