Midlands Records Highest Dog Bite, Anthrax Cases

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has recorded 541 dog bite cases and 12 anthrax cases nationwide for the week ending October 12, 2025, with no deaths reported from either disease.

According to the Ministry’s Weekly Disease Surveillance Report, Midlands, Mashonaland West, and Masvingo provinces accounted for the highest number of dog bite incidents.

Midlands and Mashonaland West each recorded 83 cases, while Masvingo reported 81.

Of the 541 dog bite cases, 96 (17.7%) were attributed to vaccinated dogs, 123 (22.7%) to unvaccinated dogs, while the majority—322 cases (59.6%)—involved dogs of unknown vaccination status. The cumulative total for 2025 now stands at 21,742 cases, with no deaths recorded.

“The majority of dog bites continue to come from dogs of unknown vaccination status, which poses a serious public health concern,” the Ministry said. “We urge local authorities and communities to strengthen rabies vaccination campaigns and promote responsible dog ownership.”

Meanwhile, all 12 anthrax cases recorded during the reporting period were from Midlands Province—10 in Gokwe North District and 2 in Gokwe South District. No fatalities were reported.

“The Ministry, through its provincial health teams, is working with veterinary services to contain the anthrax outbreak and educate communities on avoiding contact with infected animals or meat,” the Ministry added.

To date, Zimbabwe has recorded 137 anthrax cases with no deaths this year. Health officials continue to emphasize the importance of livestock vaccination, proper disposal of infected carcasses, and seeking medical care promptly after suspected exposure.
