Chinese National in court for flouting immigration laws

A 27-year-old Chinese national, Wang Changlong, has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing immigration-related charges after allegedly overstaying his visa by more than six weeks.

Changlong, who resides in Darwendale, is charged with contravening Section 29(1)(a), as read with Section 29(2)(a), of the Immigration Act [Chapter 4:02], which prohibits remaining in Zimbabwe without a valid permit.

According to the State, Changlong legally entered Zimbabwe on August 9, 2025 through Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on a 30-day business visa, which expired on September 8.

Instead of exiting the country or renewing his visa, he allegedly remained at Mount Peck Investments mine quarters in Darwendale, where he was also engaged in work activities.

The matter came to light on October 24 when immigration officials received a tip-off that Changlong was residing in the country unlawfully.

Authorities proceeded to the mine premises and located the accused. Upon being asked to produce documentation, he presented a valid Chinese passport but failed to produce a valid permit or visa extension.

Subsequent verification with the Department of Immigration confirmed that Changlong had overstayed in Zimbabwe by 46 days, leading to his arrest.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on October 28, 2025 for further proceedings.
