Zimbabwe has officially launched its candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, during a side event at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The launch was presided over by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Amon Murwira, who said Zimbabwe’s campaign is anchored on strengthening peace and security through multilateral cooperation.
“Without peace, there can be no development,” Murwira said.
He added: “Our candidature is guided by the theme Advancing 21st Century Solutions for Global Peace and Security through Multilateralism. We believe in collective action to address global challenges and uphold the principles of the UN Charter.”

Murwira outlined Zimbabwe’s priorities, which include promoting dialogue, combating terrorism, and ensuring regional stability.
“We will continue to champion efforts to silence the guns and to combat terrorism in all its forms. Zimbabwe remains committed to strengthening regional peace and stability, while advancing dialogue and cooperation globally,” he said.
He stressed that the campaign is consistent with Zimbabwe’s longstanding role in regional and international peace efforts.
“Zimbabwe’s candidature reflects our advocacy for peaceful conflict resolution, multilateralism, and shared responsibility. This aligns with our contributions to peace and security under the UN, AU, and SADC,” he said.
The launch was attended by representatives of various countries and international partners, who, according to Murwira, reaffirmed their commitment to working collectively for peace, stability, and sustainable development.
