Zimbabwe's tobacco industry sees record-breaking growth

 

Zimbabwe's tobacco production continues to soar, with the uptake of seedlings surging by 11% compared to last year. According to the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, this increase indicates that output can reach 360 million kilograms, up from 354 million kilograms previously.

High global demand and the use of certified local hybrid seeds have been identified as key factors driving the growth in tobacco production. The Tobacco Research Board's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frank Magama, notes that the hybrid tobacco seed produced by local breeders is well-suited for Zimbabwe's conditions, resulting in farmers achieving better yields.

The industry's growth has also been supported by local banks, which have enabled farmers to increase production levels. According to the Tobacco Industry Development Institute for Southern Africa's Executive Director, Jeffrey Takawira, the rise of China as the biggest off-taker of Zimbabwean tobacco has significantly contributed to the industry's success.

While the industry's growth is promising, there are concerns about the accuracy of assessments by the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board. Farmers have expressed concerns that inaccurate assessments can lead to traders budgeting for smaller crops, resulting in lower prices for tobacco. Despite these challenges, the industry is poised for further growth, with stakeholders optimistic about the future.

In the 2025 marketing season, Zimbabwe's tobacco production reached a record-breaking 350 million kilograms, surpassing the previous record of 296 million kilograms set last year. This achievement underscores the sector's robust growth and the resilience of the country's farming community.

The government has implemented initiatives to support the tobacco industry, including the Tobacco Value Chain Transformation Plan, which aims to boost productivity, promote local processing, and embed sustainability across the value chain. With the industry's growth showing no signs of slowing down, Zimbabwe is set to remain a major player in the global tobacco market.
