RBZ Warns Public Against Fake Governor Social Media Accounts

 

 

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has issued an urgent warning over the proliferation of fake social media profiles impersonating its Governor, Dr. John Mushayavanhu.

In a statement dated September 17, 2025, the central bank stressed that Dr. Mushayavanhu does not operate any social media accounts.

 “The Governor does not have any social media accounts and when he does, RBZ will publish the verified handles,” the bank said.

The RBZ cautioned that fraudulent accounts are being used to mislead the public and potentially facilitate scams. 

“The public is urged to ignore these fake accounts as continued engagement advances the interests of criminals who may use them to mislead or perpetrate criminal acts,” the statement read.

The RBZ reiterated that all communication from the Governor’s Office is released exclusively through its official platforms. The recognized channels are:

Any other pages, channels, or email addresses claiming affiliation with Dr. Mushayavanhu should be treated as fraudulent.

The bank warned that impersonation online poses serious risks, including scams, identity theft, and reputational damage. 

“Using fake accounts to pass false messages is deceptive and exposes the public to scams, identity theft, and reputational damages,” the RBZ said.

It urged both the public and media to verify all information through its official channels before sharing or acting on it.

Reaffirming its vigilance, the RBZ stressed its commitment to safeguarding the public against scams and misinformation.

 “The Bank warns the public to be vigilant and avoid falling victim to fake and misleading information,” it said.

The central bank said that updates and official statements will continue to be published only through its legitimate communication platforms.
