Zimbabwe is set to host the 2025 COSAFA U-17 Youth Championship from September 11 to 20, marking a historic milestone in Southern African football.

For the first time in the region’s history, the tournament will feature Video Assistant Referee technology at both Heart Stadium in Harare and Ngoni Stadium in Norton.

The development underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to improving the quality and integrity of youth football.

COSAFA’s Head of Referees, Felix Tangawarima, expressed pride in the introduction of VAR, confirming that all matches at both venues will utilise the technology to ensure consistent and accurate decision-making.

“With VAR implementation, Zimbabwean football is taking a significant step in aligning with global standards,” he said.

In line with CAF protocols, all participating teams underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans to verify player eligibility. ZIFA CEO Yvonne Manwa clarified that the MRI is an eligibility assessment rather than an age test, stressing that players found to be overage were excluded.

“Through the MRI, our squad dropped a few boys who were a bit older, with a few months to 18 years,” she explained.

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that preparations are complete, expressing confidence in a successful tournament.

“We have no regrets; everything is in order for the tournament to kick off,” he said, adding that the event provides an invaluable opportunity for Zimbabwe to showcase its organisational capacity and commitment to youth development.

A total of 12 teams will compete, each bringing at least 30 members. Matches will be staged at Heart Stadium and Ngoni Stadium, with the final set for September 20 at Ngoni Stadium.

The introduction of VAR technology, coupled with strict eligibility checks, represents a major step forward for youth football in Southern Africa.

With strong leadership from ZIFA and COSAFA, the 2025 U-17 Youth Championship promises to be a landmark event setting new standards for the region’s competitions.
