Government has commissioned two digital centres in Matabeleland South Province as part of its drive to promote inclusive digital transformation and bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities.
The first centre was officially opened in Tshelanyemba on Tuesday, followed by another in Mawabeni, Umzingwane District.
Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to accelerating access to digital infrastructure.
“Rebranding Community Information Centres into Digital Centres reflects their broader role in driving technology integration and achieving an upper-middle-income economy without leaving anyone behind,” said Minister Mavetera.
She was accompanied by her Deputy Minister, Dingumuzi Phuti, who emphasised the importance of extending ICT services to marginalized communities.
The launch received strong support from key players in the ICT sector, including NetOne, TelOne, Econet, Dandemutande, and the regulator POTRAZ.
According to the Ministry, the digital centres are designed to empower rural communities by providing access to education, market opportunities, entrepreneurship, and family services, while fostering national development.
