Former Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda, has assumed the role of chairman of the National Railways of Zimbabwe board, effective 1 September.

Sibanda succeeds Mike Madiro and has already begun his duties, presiding over his first full board meeting in Harare earlier this week.

He is scheduled to be formally introduced to NRZ management in Bulawayo on 4 September.

His appointment was first announced during a special board meeting in Harare on 27 August, where Mutapa Investment Fund chief executive officer, John Mangudya, presented him to the board and NRZ directors.

Sibanda now leads the board at a time when the state-owned rail operator is under pressure to accelerate turnaround strategies and restore efficiency in Zimbabwe’s critical transport sector.
