A 35-year-old self-proclaimed traditional healer has appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing fraud charges after allegedly duping a man who sought spiritual help to recover stolen property.

Jabulani Marere, of Stoneridge Park, is accused of defrauding Kudakwashe Gotami, 45, of US$190 under the pretext of using supernatural powers to identify a thief and recover stolen goods.

According to court papers, on July 26, 2025, Gotami’s home in Waterfalls, Harare, was broken into, and US$120 in cash along with clothes were stolen.

In a desperate attempt to recover his belongings, Gotami was referred to Marere, who was said to possess powers to track down thieves.

On July 27, Gotami reportedly visited the accused and paid him US$160 for his services. Marere allegedly promised that the stolen property would be returned within a week.

However, nothing materialised, and he kept assuring the complainant that results were imminent.

On August 7, Marere allegedly contacted Gotami again, claiming the thief had come to him in pain due to spiritual torment. He demanded an additional US$30 to “treat” the alleged perpetrator so that he would not die. Gotami complied.

When Gotami later visited Marere’s residence to verify the claims, he discovered that the accused had vacated the premises.

Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, and Marere instead sent an accomplice who offered vague reassurances before disappearing.

Realising he had been conned, Gotami filed a police report. Investigations led to Marere’s arrest, but none of the money was recovered.
