The Chinhoyi University of Technology community is mourning the devastating loss of Panashe Mwinga, a bright young graduate whose promising future was tragically cut short in a road accident within hours of her graduation.
Panashe, who had been capped on Thursday, August 28, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual and Communication Multimedia, was involved in a fatal accident near Mapinga close to Gwebi River that same evening.
She had been travelling with her sibling and parents when the vehicle crashed. Despite being rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital with serious injuries, she succumbed a few hours later.
CUT Students Representative Council described her as gifted, warm, and full of potential.
In solidarity with the Mwenga family, the CUT SRC has declared Monday, 1 September 2025, as “Black Monday” with students encouraged to wear black as a symbol of collective mourning and respect.
Panashe’s tragic death highlights a national crisis. Zimbabwe loses an estimated 2,000 people to road accidents every year, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police reporting over 35,000 road traffic accidents in 2024.
The World Health Organization ranks the country among those with some of the highest road traffic fatality rates in Africa. Human error, speeding, unroadworthy vehicles, and poor road infrastructure remain the leading causes.
