Zimbabwe has suffered a major setback ahead of their one-day international series against Sri Lanka after captain Craig Ervine was ruled out through injury. The veteran left-hander pulled up with discomfort on the eve of the opening match at Harare Sports Club, and medical tests confirmed he would miss the entire series.

An MRI scan conducted on Thursday revealed that “Ervine suffered a Grade II strain in his left calf as well as a chronic and resolving Grade I strain in his right calf.” The news is a significant blow to the hosts, who were banking on his experience at the top of the order.

With Ervine unavailable, fellow senior campaigner Sean Williams has been appointed stand-in captain. Williams, one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent performers in recent years, will lead the side as they look to regroup quickly against the visitors.

Zimbabwe’s playing XI for the first ODI features Brian Bennett and Ben Curran opening the batting, with Brendan Taylor returning to the side as wicketkeeper. Sikandar Raza, Wessly Madhevere, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Trevor Gwandu complete the lineup, offering a blend of experience and youthful talent.
