Police in Chegutu have arrested a 52-year-old woman, Veronica Mudzipuri, on allegations of murdering her four-year-old granddaughter in what is suspected to be a ritual killing.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the country, occurred in Shurugwi and involved the death of little Tawanayasha Kadhene.

According to police, Mudzipuri, who is an artisanal miner, is accused of lacing the child’s maheu drink with a maize pesticide pill before carrying out the gruesome act.

After the minor died, the suspect allegedly cut flesh from the victim’s cheek. Investigators say Mudzipuri then mixed the flesh with herbs prescribed by a traditional healer, cooked the mixture, and ate it as part of a ritual practice.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations were ongoing.

“We can confirm that the suspect is in custody in connection with a murder case involving her four-year-old granddaughter. Further details will be released as investigations progress,” he said.

The case has reignited concerns around ritual-related killings and the influence of traditional healers who prescribe harmful practices. Community leaders in Shurugwi described the killing as “inhuman and deeply disturbing,” calling for stronger measures to protect children from such practices.

Mudzipuri is expected to appear in court soon facing murder charges.
