The Zimbabwe Republic Police has issued a formal statement addressing concerns over a spate of armed robberies targeting security companies, following claims by Securico Security Services of increased attacks on cash-in-transit vehicles.
The statement, released on August 27, 2025, comes in response to a Daily News report citing Securico’s warning that “armed robbers get out of control as top security firm calls for heightened vigilance.”
The police said while security concerns were valid, only verified statistics should guide decision-making in the business community and among the public.
According to ZRP, between January and August 21 this year, police arrested 551 suspects for robbery, with 104 cases linked specifically to armed robberies involving security companies and cash-in-transit operations.
Recent high-profile arrests include Obey Gahve ,33, Welgman Mudyera (39), Tendai Mapira ,45, Khumbulani Ncube ,42, and Admire Chimwemwe (38). In Harare, detectives also arrested Wellington Chimumaun ,35, and Jacob Sibanda, alias Shumba, who were implicated in a series of armed robberies.
“The police will continue to pursue all armed robbery syndicates with the full force of the law,” the Commissioner-General said in the statement.
The ZRP said its collaborative approach with security companies, private investigators, and other stakeholders to strengthen security strategies and reduce incidents of violent crime.
Ongoing efforts include reviewing security protocols, vehicle deployment, and cash-handling procedures to ensure the safe transfer of high-value goods.
“The safety of both security personnel and the general public remains a top priority. We are working closely with partners in the private sector to tighten measures against armed robberies,” the statement noted.
The police also cautioned against the spread of unverified claims and alarmist reports, saying they could undermine public confidence.
Instead, ZRP urged businesses and communities to engage directly with law enforcement for accurate information and practical security solutions.
