Trump Pledges U.S. Security Role if Ukraine Peace Deal Is Reached

President Donald Trump promised on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine’s security as part of any future peace agreement with Russia, offering assurances that Kyiv has long sought but leaving questions over the details.

Standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, Trump said European nations would take the “first line of defense,” but emphasized that Washington would “be involved” in ensuring any deal endures.

“We will give them very good protection, very good security. That’s part of it,” he told reporters.

The meeting came just days after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where Putin reiterated sweeping territorial demands.

Trump had suggested at the time that the next move was up to Zelensky, sparking concern in Kyiv that Washington might pressure Ukraine into concessions.

Zelensky, who arrived in Washington to join a broader summit with seven European leaders, made clear in social media posts before the meeting that while all sides share a “strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably,” Ukraine would not cede territory.

Despite their tense history—including a public spat in February—the tone on Monday was friendlier. Trump even remarked positively on Zelensky’s attire, which had been a point of contention in their earlier encounter.

Still, fundamental differences remain. Trump has argued that territorial compromise will be necessary, while Zelensky continues to insist that Russia must withdraw from occupied areas.

Trump also floated the idea of a trilateral summit with Putin and Zelensky, though it is uncertain if the Kremlin will agree.

For now, the pledges of support offered Kyiv a boost. Yet with Moscow maintaining maximalist claims and Kyiv refusing to surrender land, the prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain.
