Government has ramped up health sector development efforts, with 22,271 women screened for cervical cancer and significant progress made in constructing drug rehabilitation centres and key hospital infrastructure across the country.
This was revealed by the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, during a briefing on ongoing projects in various provinces.
In Victoria Falls, the Chinotimba Drug Rehabilitation Centre has been completed and is now fully operational. Meanwhile, construction of the Wilkins Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Harare has reached 95% completion.
L Both projects form part of the Government’s national strategy to tackle the growing crisis of drug and substance abuse.
“The oxygen plant at Lupane Provincial Hospital is now 80% complete and will play a vital role in saving lives in Matabeleland North,” said Dr. Mombeshora.
In Binga, the district hospital mortuary has been successfully renovated and is now functional, providing critical relief to the local community.
To improve healthcare access in remote areas, eight mobile clinic trucks have been procured for all provinces, with delivery expected before the end of August.
As part of efforts to digitise the health supply chain, the Ministry has rolled out the Electronic Logistics Management Information System, which has now reached 56% coverage. Health workers from 124 facilities in Gwanda, Mazowe, Mwenezi, Murehwa, and Zvimba have been trained, with tablets and computers delivered to support the digital system.
Dr. Mombeshora also confirmed that of the 22,271 women screened for cervical cancer nationwide, 1,435 tested positive, and 583 have so far received treatment.
Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the health delivery system and expanding access to essential services across the country.
