A Chitungwiza Municipality refuse collector has died following a tragic accident during routine waste collection in Manyame Park.
Simon Maketo, who worked in the Refuse Section, sustained fatal injuries after an incident involving a municipal refuse truck and a stationary commuter omnibus. According to reports, the truck encountered the parked vehicle blocking its route.
While attempting to navigate around the obstruction, Maketo, who was standing on the right side of the truck, reportedly struck his head on a nearby precast wall. He was then hit again by the moving truck and fell to the ground.
Emergency assistance was rendered, and he was initially taken to St Mary’s Clinic before being transferred to Chitungwiza Central Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, the Municipality of Chitungwiza confirmed the incident and expressed sorrow over the loss of their colleague.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Simon Maketo, a dedicated member of our Refuse Section,” read part of the statement.
Mayor Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, Acting Town Clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso, councillors, and staff conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Maketo’s family, friends, and colleagues.
“May the Lord comfort and strengthen the family during this very difficult time,” the statement concluded.
