President Emmerson Mnangagwa has drawn a firm line in the sand, declaring that Zanu-PF will not bend its constitution, values, or ideology, in what appears as a response to the attempted co-option of businessman Kudakwashe Tagwireyi into the party’s Central Committee.
“Zanu PF must never compromise on its constitution... This is the bedrock upon which we must build greater resilience,” he said while speaking at the Politburo’s 385th session in Harare.
Mnangagwa warned that the sacrifices of fallen liberation heroes must not be dishonored by internal maneuvers that undermine party structures.
The remarks come as challenges have come up over the legality and optics of shoehorning Tagwireyi into Zanu-PF’s highest decision-making body outside Congress.
The timing and tone of Mnangagwa’s remarks appear to be a subtle yet strategic rebuke of behind-the-scenes power plays and a reaffirmation that Zanu PF’s internal rules—not personal influence or wealth—should determine leadership positions.
