A 53-year-old man from Chitungwiza has appeared before the Harare Magistrate’s Court facing fraud charges after allegedly orchestrating a SIM swap scam that led to the theft of over US$10,000 and ZiG$12,230 from a Harare man’s bank and mobile money accounts.

Godfrey Mavuvo was remanded in custody pending further investigations. His alleged accomplice, Tigere Dube, is already in remand facing similar charges.

The complainant, Forward Mapfunde ,43, of Warren Park D in Harare, had received a lump sum payment of US$13,003.34 and ZWL$14,041 on September 23, 2024, into his National Building Society nostro and ZiG accounts.

The court heard that between September 28 and 30, 2024, Mavuvo and Dube fraudulently obtained a duplicate national identity card bearing Mapfunde’s personal details but with Mavuvo’s photograph.

Using the fake ID, they allegedly visited Econet and illegally replaced Mapfunde’s registered SIM card, which was linked to his NBS accounts and EcoCash wallet.

Once the SIM card was under their control, the suspects reportedly transferred funds from Mapfunde’s bank accounts to his EcoCash wallet and proceeded to withdraw US$10 000 and ZiG$12,230.
