The Judicial Service Commission has sworn in three new magistrates, reinforcing a notable trend: women now significantly outnumber men in Zimbabwe’s lower courts, with 147 female magistrates compared to 98 males.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Chief Magistrate Vongai Guwuriro said the judiciary continues to see more women joining its ranks.

“We now have 247 magistrates, including those sworn in  — 98 males and 147 females. The majority of applications we receive for magistrate posts are from women,” said Guwuriro.

The newly appointed magistrates are Tafara Machaya, Nyarai Patience Mushoriwa, and Meggie Ruzive.

Guwuriro also spoke about the ongoing digital transformation of the magistrates’ courts through the Integrated Case Management System (ICMS), aimed at enhancing efficiency in the justice delivery system.

“We’ve already rolled out ICMS in Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland North. Since the superior courts had already undergone digitisation, we took lessons from their experience to ensure a smoother transition,” she said.

She added that the necessary infrastructure, including backup internet and power systems, had been put in place, and staff had received training to interface confidently with the new system.

Preparations are now underway to launch ICMS in Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces. As part of its public engagement efforts, the JSC has introduced “ICMS Fridays” — a campaign designed to raise awareness of the system in both rural and urban communities.

Traditional leaders are also being engaged to help drive community awareness and support for the JSC’s digital overhaul.
