The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has sounded the alarm over falsified Cloxacillin capsules that are being illegally distributed on the local market, posing a serious threat to public health and patient safety.

Garta Investments has been identified as one of the sources of the counterfeit product, which has been found to differ significantly from the genuine Cloxacillin manufactured by Varichem Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd.

“The falsified version bears sharp-cornered brown labels, while the authentic Varichem product has rounded, orange-coloured labels,” said MCAZ Director General Mr Richard  Rukwata.

He said the fake capsules are unmarked, whereas genuine ones are clearly inscribed “V-CLOX 250.”

He also noted that authentic Cloxacillin containers are sealed with aluminium foila feature missing from the falsified versions.

MCAZ warned that the circulation of falsified medicines could result in treatment failure, harmful reactions, and increased antimicrobial resistance due to the possible lack of efficacy and presence of unknown components.

All licensed pharmacies, wholesalers, public and private clinics, and hospitals have been directed to quarantine any falsified Cloxacillin 250mg capsules in their stocks. The quarantined units must be submitted to MCAZ for disposal by August 1, 2025.

“MCAZ continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies and supply chain stakeholders to identify and remove counterfeit medicines from the market,” said Mr Rukwata.

“The Authority remains committed to ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of all medicines available in Zimbabwe.”
