Chitungwiza Mayor, Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, has issued an emotional appeal to the government following a horrific road accident at Hunyani Bridge along Seke Road that left 17 people dead and four injured.
In a solemn statement, Mayor Mangoma described the scene as one of the most traumatic incidents the community has witnessed.
"It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that I address the residents of Chitungwiza and the nation at large following this morning’s horrific accident," she said.
"Seventeen reportedly died in a devastating collision involving a 30-tonne haulage truck and a commuter omnibus. The scale of the tragedy is heartbreaking."
After visiting the crash site with the Acting Town Clerk and council officials, the mayor recounted the harrowing scene: "What I witnessed was truly heart-breaking. Emergency services worked tirelessly to retrieve the deceased and assist the injured. This is one of the most disturbing tragedies our community has endured."
She urgently called for government intervention: "I am formally appealing to the Government of Zimbabwe to declare this accident a national disaster. Doing so will unlock vital resources to assist the bereaved in mourning their loved ones. We appeal for national support."
Mayor Mangoma also highlighted the alarming frequency of fatal accidents on Seke Road, urging drivers to exercise caution: "In a short space of time, our community has endured the trauma of four serious road traffic accidents along Seke Road—each one claiming precious lives. No journey is worth a life."
The Zimbabwe Republic Police released a detailed statement confirming the tragic incident.
"A haulage truck traveling towards Harare lost control, veered into the oncoming lane, and hit two pedestrians on the road island, killing them instantly," the police reported.
"The truck then collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan kombi traveling towards Chitungwiza."
The force of the crash caused the truck to overturn, crushing the kombi beneath it.
"Fifteen kombi occupants, including the driver, died on the spot. Three kombi passengers and one truck occupant were injured," the ZRP stated.
The victims—10 females and seven males—were taken to Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary, while the injured received treatment at the same facility.
