Zimbabwe’s government has intensified its crackdown on drug and substance abuse, resulting in the arrest of 1,445 suspects and the dismantling of 39 illegal drug bases during the period between March 12 and June 2, 2025, according to a report presented to Cabinet on Tuesday.
As part of the country’s Supply Reduction Pillar, the Criminal Investigations Department received five surveillance drones from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to bolster monitoring efforts at key border posts where drugs are believed to be smuggled in. A total of 206 nationwide raids were conducted during the period.
In a naming and shaming campaign, 41 alleged drug kingpins were publicly identified, with several receiving custodial sentences ranging from 12 months to 15 years.
The Liquor Licensing Board also intensified enforcement, inspecting 461 liquor outlets. While 429 were found compliant, 32 unlicensed premises were fined US$40 each.
