The Zimbabwe Republic Police has raised alarm over a disturbing trend of job scams on social media after a Chitungwiza woman was robbed and raped in a fake employment setup.
According to police, the 30-year-old woman was approached via WhatsApp by an unknown individual offering her a job as a shopkeeper in Domboshava. Desperate for employment, the woman followed the instructions and travelled to Mungate Business Centre, where she was told someone would pick her up for her new position.
While waiting at the bus stop, two men approached her, claiming to have been sent by her supposed employer. Trusting them, she got into their vehicle. But instead of heading to a workplace, the men drove her to Crowhill, Borrowdale, in Harare.
There, they robbed her and took turns raping her before fleeing the scene.
The attack occurred on June 22, and the case has since sparked renewed warnings from the authorities.
In a statement issued on June 24, 2025, the ZRP cautioned the public against placing trust in unverified social media contacts offering jobs or services.
“The ZRP warns the public against seeking employment, special services, or private engagements through social media platforms, especially with people whose identities have not been checked or verified. This follows cases of robbery and rape,” read the statement.
Law enforcement says investigations into the incident are ongoing and urged members of the public to report suspicious online activities.
As scammers increasingly use WhatsApp, Facebook, and other platforms to lure victims into traps, the police are encouraging Zimbabweans to verify all employment or service offers with reputable sources before taking action.
