A 35-year-old woman is facing theft charges after allegedly stealing cryptocurrency worth US$583,660.24 from prominent eye specialist Solomon Guramatunhu.
Messe Samantha Chiyangwa appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa charged with theft. She is expected back in court on June 25 for a bail application hearing.
The complainant in the case is Solomon Guramatunhu.
According to prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, the complainant purchased cryptocurrency in 2020 while in India, through a company based in the United Kingdom. Upon his return to Zimbabwe, he engaged Lloyd Chiyangwa, the accused’s husband, to assist in setting up digital wallets.
Lloyd Chiyangwa was instructed to set up five wallets for Guramatunhu: Trust Wallet, Exodus, Cosmostation, Wemix, and Metamask.
Between October 31, 2021, and January 7, 2024, Messe allegedly connived with her husband to steal tokens from the complainant’s Metamask wallet by unlawfully accessing its address. The stolen tokens were then transferred to the Waybit Exchange.
Guramatunhu only discovered the theft on January 27, 2024, when he attempted to move the assets to another wallet.
The accused allegedly used multiple devices, including an iPhone 14, iPhone 12 Pro, Linux U, Macintosh, and an Android phone, to facilitate the unauthorized transactions.
To date, the accused is reportedly still transferring tokens to various destinations using communication devices that are yet to be recovered.
