Pit Bull Owner Seeks Bail in Fatal Attack Case

A Harare man whose pit bulls fatally attacked a passerby in Bluffhill is set to apply for bail after previously remaining in custody due to outstanding legal issues.

Mike Mapinga, the owner of the dogs, informed the court of his intention to file a fresh bail application in the culpable homicide case.

Mapinga had initially chosen not to pursue bail because of a separate warrant of arrest related to allegations of raping his maid. However, the warrant was later canceled after a medical doctor testified that his failure to appear in court was due to illness.

With that matter now resolved, Mapinga's rape trial is scheduled to begin on June 26.

In the culpable homicide case, Mapinga has engaged a new lawyer and plans to submit his bail application on June 27 before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.

The State alleges that Mapinga’s negligence led to the fatal mauling by his three pit bulls.

The upcoming bail hearing will determine whether he will be released from custody pending trial.
