A dramatic account of abduction, robbery, and attempted murder unfolded at the Harare Magistrates' Courts yesterday, as Fredrick Chiraya was remanded in custody following his appearance before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa. Chiraya stands accused of kidnapping and attempted murder in connection with a violent incident that occurred on May 9, 2025.

The court heard a harrowing tale of how Chiraya and his alleged accomplices, who remain at large, meticulously planned and executed the abduction of Christopher Makamba. The group reportedly drove an unregistered grey Toyota Fortuner to Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku, Harare, around 11 am. There, they accosted Makamba, swiftly handcuffing him and blindfolding him with a sack before forcing him into their vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, the assailants allegedly robbed Makamba of US$800 in cash, his driver's license, national ID, and passport. When Makamba's friend, Tawanda Zivanai, attempted to intervene, he was reportedly threatened with a firearm.

The terror continued as the gang repeatedly stepped on Makamba's head while the vehicle sped towards Shamva. Upon reaching a bushy area near Mhumhurwi Mountain, they removed his restraints and blindfold before launching into a brutal assault with iron bars and button sticks. In a desperate bid for survival, Makamba feigned unconsciousness. It was during this ordeal that Makamba was reportedly able to identify Chiraya as he removed his leg irons.

After the savage beating, the gang abandoned Makamba in the remote area. He was later discovered and rescued by a good Samaritan, who took him to Kopje Police Station. Makamba was subsequently referred to Marondera Hospital for urgent medical treatment, and a formal police report was filed at Mabvuku Police Station.

The breakthrough in the case came on May 29, when detectives from CID Homicide received a crucial tip-off indicating Chiraya's presence at the Harare Magistrates Court. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, law enforcement officers apprehended Chiraya, leading to his subsequent court appearance and remand in custody.
