A Harare man has appeared in court facing allegations of defrauding the director of Cobra Security of US$76,000 in a botched vehicle import deal.

Elias Murandu, 37, of Crowborough North, was arraigned before magistrate Ruth Moyo at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts on charges of fraud. He was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.

The complainant is Misheck Zvarivadza, the director of Cobra Security.

Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that between March and September 2024, Murandu allegedly misrepresented to Zvarivadza that he could import three vehicles from South Africa — a Range Rover, a Toyota Hilux Legend 50, and a Toyota Fortuner — for a total of US$76,000.

Zvarivadza is said to have paid the money in full through both cash and bank transfers.

However, Murandu allegedly failed to deliver the vehicles and instead offered a series of excuses before cutting off communication altogether.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Murandu’s arrest. To date, none of the money has been recovered.
