Zimbabwe will host the Southern African Development Community Transfrontier Conservation Areas International Conference and Summit from May 19–23 at the Harare International Conference Centre. The event marks 25 years of cross-border conservation cooperation and will gather heads of state, traditional leaders, conservationists, and international experts under the theme: “Transfrontier Conservation Areas — 25 Years of Cooperation for Regional Integration and Sustainable Development.”
TFCA initiatives, spearheaded by SADC, aim to promote wildlife conservation, eco-tourism, and the sustainable use of shared natural resources across borders. ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the summit will shape the future of sustainable development in the region.
Backed by the European Union and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the “NaturAfrica” programme, the summit will focus on strengthening political commitment, enhancing investment, and fostering regional conservation collaboration.
According to SADC’s Head of Communication Barbara Lopi, the conference will also feature sessions on tourism development and disaster risk reduction, and is expected to yield a concrete action plan, new agreements, and expanded funding partnerships.
“This is for the benefit of present and future generations,” added Farawo, reaffirming the region’s belief in conservation-driven community development.
