A 24 year old Harare man has been convicted of negligent driving and sentenced to pay a US$250 fine or face three months in prison.
Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court found Panashe Gezani guilty of negligent driving after he lost control of his vehicle and hit a pedestrian along the Harare-Chirundu road.
According to court records, the incident occurred on August 10, 2024, at around 1350 hours. Gezani, a resident of Crowborough North and holder of a Zimbabwean driver’s licence for classes 2 and 4, was driving a Toyota Vitz alone.
Upon reaching the 109-kilometre peg, Gezani reportedly lost control of the vehicle and hit Tavengwa Banda, who was walking on the right side of the road.
The court heard that Banda was walking in the same direction as the car and sustained injuries in the incident.
The magistrate ruled that Gezani had been negligent by failing to act reasonably when a collision seemed imminent, speeding under the circumstances, and failing to maintain control of the vehicle.
Gezani was also prohibited from driving for three months.
