Parents in Chitungwiza turned out in large numbers for a local immunisation outreach held on Monday, showing strong support for the government’s free vaccination programme.
Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to protect their children from dangerous diseases. “Vaccines give me peace of mind. I know my child is safe,” said one parent. Another added, “No matter what your religion is, every parent should protect their child’s health through vaccination.”
Sitembile Sando, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation Officer in Chitungwiza, said the event was part of World Immunisation Week and aimed to remind parents about the importance of routine vaccinations.
“We are happy to see many parents bringing their children early in the week,” she said. “This shows that people now understand how important it is to follow the vaccination schedule.”
Tonderai Chabata, the Seke North District Community Health Officer, noted that Zimbabwe’s immunisation programme covers more than 30 life-threatening diseases.
“Immunisation is not just for one child — it protects the whole community,” he said. “It stops the spread of disease and saves lives.”
He also said the government is working with partners to ensure vaccines are available across the country.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood vaccines help prevent about four million deaths worldwide each year.
