President Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community in August next year when Zimbabwe hosts the bloc’s ordinary summit.
This is contrary to reports that the chairmanship changes hands with effect from January, 1, 2024.
The Sadc chairmanship changes hands at each Sadc ordinary summit which is normally held once a year.
Mnangagwa is expected to take over the chairperson’s role from Angolan President João Lourenço when Zimbabwe hosts Sadc's 44th ordinary summit in August next year, after having assumed the bloc’s deputy chairmanship during its 43rd summit held in Angola.
Following the August 2023 harmonised elections, the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change petitioned Sadc over the result, which the party’s leader Nelson Chanisa disputed.
The CCC also sought to block Mnangagwa from assuming the chairmanship of the 16-member bloc next year.
Mnangagwa was declared the winner of the election with 52.6% of the vote against Chamisa’s 44%.
