Zimbabwe’s emerging padel scene is entering a more competitive phase, with players set to battle for national honours and a route to regional competition at a new tournament in Harare this weekend.
The inaugural First Capital Bank Padel Tournament, scheduled for August 22 and 23 at Stable Sports in Borrowdale, comes as interest in the sport continues to grow both locally and internationally.
Unlike established sporting codes with deep-rooted competitive structures, padel is still developing its footprint in Zimbabwe. The tournament is therefore expected to provide an important platform for players to gain competitive experience while exposing the sport to a wider audience.

The stakes will extend beyond the local competition, with the top two teams in both the men’s and women’s doubles competitions earning qualification to represent Zimbabwe at the FMCapital Group Regional Padel Grand Final in Botswana next month.
That regional pathway could prove significant for Zimbabwean players looking to measure themselves against competitors from other countries and gain exposure outside the domestic circuit.
The tournament will use a knockout format, with men’s and women’s doubles making up the competitive categories. A total prize pool of US$2,500 will also be shared among the competitors.
For the organisers, however, the tournament is being positioned as more than a weekend competition. The event is intended to contribute to the development of the sport, encourage participation and create opportunities for local players to progress.
First Capital Bank has previously invested in Zimbabwean sport through its five-year involvement with the Zimbabwe Junior Golf Open.
