Manica Diamonds head coach Patrick Mandizha has urged supporters to rally behind the team as the Gem Boys intensify their battle to preserve their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League status.
The Mutare-based side has endured a difficult campaign, collecting only two victories in 17 matches and finding themselves in the relegation zone, with Triangle United rooted at the bottom of the standings.
Mandizha acknowledged the poor start to the season but expressed optimism that performances have improved since he took charge.
"We got off to a very poor start. We dropped quite a number of valuable points in our first 10 games, only managing two points. But since taking over the team, the performance is gradually improving and we're collecting vital points so that we move out of the relegation zone," said Mandizha.
The former striker stressed that maintaining top-flight football is important not only for the club but also for the entire Manicaland Province.
"Manica Diamonds is a team from Manicaland and it is important for us to maintain our premiership status for our fans. We encourage our supporters to support us not only at home but even during away games so that they boost the confidence of the players," he said.
Mandizha revealed that the players fully appreciate the importance of the survival battle even though the squad finds themselves in the relegation zone

"The players understand the importance and it's not only for the benefit of the supporters. It is also for themselves, their livelihood, their families and their careers in general," he said.
Looking ahead to the second half of the season, Mandizha expects a tougher challenge as clubs strengthen their squads during the mid-season transfer window.
"The last 17 games are going to be very difficult. Most teams will improve their squads by acquiring new players and fixing the areas they have been lacking. Every team will be in the fast lane, so you have to start picking vital points, especially away from home," he said.
He emphasised the need to maximize points at home while grinding out results on the road.
"You have to make sure you get maximum points at home and away you try to fight for a draw. If that happens, then you are good to go in the second round," said Mandizha.
The Manica Diamonds coach also confirmed that the club is targeting reinforcements, particularly in attack , which had been the most struggling side for the team
"We are definitely looking forward to beefing up our squad. We have areas that we are lacking, especially in the final third where we lack clinical finishing. We are looking forward to bringing in a few experienced players to help our youngsters," he said.
Manica Diamonds begin the second round of the campaign on Saturday knowing that every point will be crucial as they seek to avoid relegation and secure another season in the Premiership.
