As Zimbabwe's healthcare sector faces rising costs, access barriers and growing demand for digital solutions, Cimas Health Group has launched the third edition of its flagship innovation challenge, Healthathon 3.0, aimed at unlocking local talent to transform healthcare delivery.

Running under the theme "Reimagining Healthcare Through Disruptive Innovation," the national competition seeks technology-driven solutions that can improve healthcare access, affordability, wellness, disease prevention, operational efficiency and patient experience across the country.

Speaking at the official launch in Harare on Wednesday, Cimas Health Group Chief Executive Officer Vuli Ndlovu said innovation had become a critical pillar in shaping the future of healthcare and that platforms such as the Healthathon were essential in empowering Zimbabweans to contribute practical solutions to the country's healthcare challenges.

"The healthcare industry is undergoing rapid technological transformation, and innovation remains critical in shaping the future of healthcare. Through the Healthathon challenge, we are demonstrating our commitment to addressing some of the complex and evolving challenges facing our country's healthcare sector," said Ndlovu.

Registration for the competition opens on June 22 and closes on July 12. Innovators, startups, university technology teams and independent product developers are being invited to submit ideas capable of making a meaningful impact within Zimbabwe's healthcare ecosystem.

In a departure from previous editions, Healthathon 3.0 will not be restricted to predetermined categories. Instead, participants will have the freedom to identify pressing healthcare challenges and develop solutions they believe can deliver the greatest impact.

Ndlovu said the revised approach was intended to encourage greater creativity, originality and diversity of ideas while allowing innovators to explore opportunities across the entire healthcare value chain.

"The Cimas Healthathon is not merely a competition. It is a journey of creativity, collaboration and innovation that brings together the country's brightest innovation hubs, startups and independent innovators to develop bold solutions to pressing healthcare challenges," he said.

The competition will culminate in a Demo Day scheduled for August 28, where shortlisted teams will present their innovations before a panel of healthcare experts, innovation leaders and members of the Cimas executive team.

The winning team will receive US$3,500, while the first and second runners-up will walk away with US$2,000 and US$1,500 respectively.

Beyond the cash prizes, participants will also have an opportunity to pilot their innovations with Cimas Health Group, potentially paving the way for wider adoption, commercialisation and strategic partnerships.

Providing further details on participation requirements, Cimas Health Group Chief Information Officer Foster Akaketwa said the challenge is open to Zimbabwean innovation hubs, startups, university technology teams and independent product teams committed to improving healthcare through technology.

He said teams should comprise between three and five members with complementary skills to encourage multidisciplinary collaboration and enhance the quality of solutions developed.

Akaketwa added that all submissions must address genuine challenges within Zimbabwe's healthcare system, demonstrate technical feasibility and show potential for practical implementation.

"Teams are allowed to choose their own problem area, but they must clearly demonstrate why the problem is important, who it affects and why their proposed solution is viable," he said.

Over the years, the Healthathon has evolved beyond a simple competition into a national platform for digital health innovation, bringing together healthcare professionals, technology experts and entrepreneurs to collaborate on solutions that can strengthen the country's healthcare system.

As Zimbabwe continues embracing digital transformation across multiple sectors, Healthathon 3.0 presents an opportunity for innovators to convert ideas into practical solutions capable of improving health outcomes and expanding access to quality healthcare.

With registration set to open later this month, the challenge is expected to attract some of the country's brightest innovators as they compete to help shape the future of healthcare in Zimbabwe.
