Government mourns late boxer Ndodana Ncube

Ndodana “The Black Hammer” Ncube

The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB), together with the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, has extended its deepest condolences following the untimely passing of Zimbabwean professional boxer Ndodana Ncube in the early hours of 16 May 2026 in South Africa.

In a statement, the ZNBWCB C.E.O Priscilla Kadungure described Ncube’s death as a profound loss to the boxing fraternity, the wider sporting community, and the nation at large. The late boxer, she said, would be remembered for his dedication, courage, discipline, and his contribution to the sport of boxing in Zimbabwe.

The statement further noted that from the time of Ncube’s injury—occurring during a match—Government, through the Ministry and the ZNBWCB, remained committed to ensuring he received the best possible medical care and support

It added that consultations and engagements with relevant authorities, medical personnel and boxing stakeholders were maintained to safeguard his welfare throughout the difficult period.

Government also expressed appreciation for the support extended by Boxing South Africa, including medical teams, promoters, and other stakeholders who stood with Ncube and his family during his treatment.

The Ministry and the ZNBWCB said their thoughts and prayers are with Ncube’s family, friends, fellow athletes, trainers, and the entire boxing community during this painful time, urging all to draw strength and comfort as they mourn the loss of a sportsman.

Looking ahead, the ZNBWCB and the Ministry reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening athlete welfare, safety standards, and medical preparedness in combat sports.

Details regarding funeral arrangements and official proceedings will be communicated in due course, in consultation with Ncube’s family.
