Zim Launches Programme to Sustain Gains in Fight Against GBV

Zimbabwe has launched a new national programme aimed at consolidating progress made in combating gender-based violence, as authorities move to strengthen prevention systems, survivor protection and access to justice for women and girls.

The initiative, titled Sustaining the Gains, was officially launched by Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa with support from the United Nations Population Fund and development partners including the European Union and Swiss Cooperation.

Officials said the programme builds on progress achieved under the Spotlight Initiative, a multi-country intervention targeting violence against women and girls across Africa, including Zimbabwe.

“Building on the Spotlight Initiative, the programme strengthens justice, protection, and services for all women and girls,” UNFPA Zimbabwe said, noting that implementation will prioritise expanding access to essential support services at community level.

Zimbabwe continues to face significant GBV challenges, with national surveys indicating that more than one in three women experience physical or sexual violence during their lifetime. Reporting levels remain low, while survivors often encounter social stigma, economic dependency and institutional barriers that limit access to justice and support services.

UNFPA reaffirmed its commitment to translating programme gains into tangible outcomes.

“We remain committed to translating this progress into meaningful impact by expanding access to essential services and ensuring that no woman or girl is left behind,” the agency said.

While previous donor-supported interventions have improved awareness, strengthened referral pathways and expanded service delivery, stakeholders acknowledge that sustainability remains a major concern as funding cycles conclude.

Analysts note that long-term success will depend on increased domestic financing, stronger institutional coordination and effective enforcement of existing laws, alongside sustained efforts to shift social norms that perpetuate violence.

The Sustaining the Gains programme signals continuity in Zimbabwe’s anti-GBV strategy, but its ultimate impact will be measured by reductions in violence prevalence, improved survivor support systems and strengthened accountability mechanisms across communities and institutions.
