Congo FA President, Family Jailed for Life Over Misuse of FIFA Funds

Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas

The president of the Congolese Football Federation, Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, along with his wife and son, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of embezzling funds allocated by FIFA.

A court in the Republic of the Congo convicted Mayolas and his family members over the misappropriation of approximately US$1.3 million that had been provided by the global football governing body to support football development programmes in the country.

Prosecutors said the funds, which were meant to improve football infrastructure and development initiatives, were instead diverted for personal use. Investigations revealed that the money had been channelled through accounts linked to Mayolas and members of his family.

Following the trial, the court ruled that the misuse of the funds constituted a serious breach of trust and corruption involving public sporting resources. As a result, Mayolas, together with his wife and son, received life sentences.

Authorities said the ruling sends a strong message about the consequences of misusing resources meant to promote sport and development.
