Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Frederick Mhona has suspended Rimbi Travel and Tours (Pvt) LTD and Tashllyrt Investiments (Pvt)LTD operating as Zebra Kiss’ licenses of operation with immediate effect.

This comes after buses from both companies were captured in a video racing and blocking each other on the road leading to the death of the Rimbi bus conductor and several others injured.

The suspension is provided for according to Section 17(1)(b)(i) of the Road Motor Transportation Act which empowers the Commissioner of Road Transport to suspend the operator’s licenses where it appears that there is disregard of the terms and conditions of the licenses.

In a statement, Minister Mhona said the ZRP, Traffic Council of Zimbabwe and Emergency Health Services established the component of human error as the principal cause of the road accident.

Sections 51, 52 and 53 of the Road Traffic Act [chapter 13:11] prohibits driving without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for others, negligent or dangerous driving and reckless driving respectively.

The violation is a breach of the terms and conditions of the two operators’ licenses for them to operate in Zimbabwe.

“The Ministry has noted with great concern the video circulating on social media, which captures the circumstances leading to the fatal road traffic accident that occurred on January 17.

“Informed by the foregoing violations and verified videographic circumstances, the Commissioner of the Road Transport, after informing the two operators were given a reasonable opportunity to make representations on the matter in terms of Section 17 (2)(b)(i) of the same Act [chapter 13:15],” Minister Mhona said.

The Ministry has warned the public that the ministry will take stern measures against those who blatantly violet road traffic rules.

Earlier, the directors of the two bus companies had issued a statement to say they would assist with payment of hospital bills for the injured, with one indicating it had since suspended its driver pending dismissal.
