Two Harare women have appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing theft charges after allegedly stealing clothing worth US$1 450 from a boutique in the central business district.
Edina Phiri, 39, of Epworth, and Elizabeth Togara, 37, of Glen View 8, are accused of stealing the items from a shop owned by Rosemary Tendai Machana, 43, which is located at Advern House, corner Innez Terrace and Robert Mugabe Road.
According to court papers, the complainant alleges that the accused used the shop’s fitting room to conceal clothing during a series of visits in early December 2025.
On December 7, the two allegedly entered the shop posing as customers and paid for three vests valued at US$30. However, they are accused of concealing additional clothing in the fitting room before leaving the premises.

The following day, December 8, the pair reportedly returned and repeated the same tactic, buying two T-shirts for US$20 while allegedly stealing more items without detection.
The matter came to light on December 9 after Machana noticed discrepancies in her stock and reviewed CCTV footage. The footage allegedly captured the accused stealing clothing, and the shop’s sales assistant, Claricy Nyikayaramba, positively identified them.
The stolen items reportedly included 36 men’s jeans, 33 pairs of jean shorts, and 15 pairs of ladies’ “boyfriend” jeans.
A police report was subsequently filed, leading to the arrest of the two suspects. Searches conducted at their residences in Epworth and Glen View did not yield any recoveries, and none of the stolen clothing was found.
The accused have since been charged with theft. The State is expected to present CCTV footage and witness testimony as evidence when the matter returns to court.
