Xi Proposes Four-Point Plan to Advance Women’s Development

Source: Xinhua | Edited for Zim Now Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the global community to take concrete steps to promote gender equality and the advancement of women, as the world marked 30 years since the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Addressing the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, Xi outlined four proposals aimed at accelerating women’s all-round development at a time when over 600 million women and girls remain affected by war, conflict, and extreme poverty.

1. Create an enabling environment

Xi called for stronger global cooperation to ensure peace, stability, and equal access to resources and opportunities for women. He emphasized the need for systems that allow women to thrive across all sectors of society.

2. Strengthen protection and rights

He urged countries to reinforce legal and institutional frameworks that safeguard women’s rights, particularly in regions affected by conflict, poverty, or disaster. Xi said all forms of violence against women must be “resolutely eliminated,” with better mechanisms to prevent abuse.

3. Empower through innovation and inclusion

The Chinese leader encouraged governments to harness science, technology, and green development to expand women’s participation in high-growth industries. He also called for equal access to quality education and healthcare, and broader involvement of women in decision-making and governance.

4. Deepen global cooperation

Xi reaffirmed China’s support for the UN’s central role in advancing women’s issues and announced a new package of measures: a US $10 million contribution to UN Women, US $100 million from the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund for women-focused projects, 1 000 community livelihood programs targeting women and girls, training for 50 000 women in China, and the creation of a Global Center for Women’s Capacity Building.

Leaders from Ghana, Mozambique, Iceland, Dominica, and Sri Lanka joined senior UN officials in calling for renewed global commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the continued advancement of women worldwide.
