Farmers across 15 districts are adopting climate-smart practices through Open Learning Days, a peer-learning initiative supported by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in partnership with development agencies.

The programme is helping communities build resilience against climate shocks by focusing on soil and water conservation, post-harvest management, livestock feed preservation, and mechanisation.

UNDP Zimbabwe said the initiative is already driving knowledge-sharing among smallholder farmers, with strong uptake of techniques designed to boost productivity under changing weather patterns.

“Farmers across 15 districts are learning, sharing, and adopting climate-smart practices through Open Learning Days.

"From soil and water conservation to post-harvest management and livestock feed preservation, peer learning is driving resilience,” the organisation noted.

Agriculture Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri said the government remains committed to transforming agriculture into a prosperous and competitive sector through mechanisation, capacity building, and sustainable practices.

“Agriculture is being transformed into a prosperous, diverse, and competitive industry. The Ministry is supporting mechanisation, climate-smart farming practices, and capacity-building programmes to increase productivity and strengthen resilience,” Jiri said.

The climate-smart agriculture drive comes as Zimbabwe continues to grapple with the impact of recurrent droughts, erratic rainfall, and food security challenges.

Authorities say such programmes are critical to safeguarding rural livelihoods while aligning agriculture with national climate action strategies.
