MBD: Can you share any childhood memories that may be linked to what you are doing now?
CSM: Growing up, I fondly remember helping my mom with her crochet orders, which she would resell as a cross-boarder trader in South Africa and Botswana. This early exposure not only instilled in me a love for handmade crafts, but also taught me valuable skills in production, quality control, and entrepreneurship. It was during these moments that I developed a passion for creating something with my own hands, which has since evolved into my work with Machuma Accessories.
This childhood experience laid the foundation for my interest in sustainable fashion and accessories and I’m grateful for the lessons I learned from my mom. I also believe that we are all given a gift that we need to nurture and with the correct support system one can prosper.
MBD: Tell me your brief background.
CSM: Machuma Accessories is a Zimbabwean-based business that crafts unique, sustainable accessories blending traditional African designs with modern style. Using eco-friendly materials like brass, cowry shells, wood, and bone, we create stunning pieces that showcase African heritage.
Our first clothing brand, the Naniso Collection, is a heartfelt tribute to my late grandmother, Naniso Mpinyuri. This designer clothing line fuses beads with intricate designs, reflecting our commitment to quality craftsmanship.
At Machuma Accessories, our mission is to empower artisans, promote eco-friendly practices, and celebrate African beauty. With a focus on community and positive impact, we strive to make a difference through fashion. With a degree in Communication and English from Catholic University (2015-2018), I have furthered my expertise through certifications in Digital Marketing (2021), Customer Experience (2023), and Graphic Design (2024) from Marketers Association of Zimbabwe (MAZ).
As a seasoned communication and digital marketing professional, I own Munakie Digital Consultancy, offering commercial digital marketing services. Launched Machuma Accessories on the 31st August 2020, we are excited to celebrate our five-year milestone.
MBD: How did you start your business and why this?
CSM: I was in college and I had recently won Miss Catholic University 2nd Princess. I knew that I had a huge role to play and lead by example. I cut my hair short as a symbol of starting a new chapter of being aware of my culture and who I am. I needed a sense of belonging. With that image, I felt plain and a friend of mine called Eva bought me a pair of earrings. That is when I realized a gap. My parents took me to Mbare Musika at the arts and crafts place. I ordered earrings and bracelets for US$10, then the journey continued. From getting training and watching YouTube videos, I managed to start creating my own craft and also procuring from trusted sources locally then from Zambia, South Africa and Tanzania. Until now it’s an ongoing learning curve.
MBD: Why that name and what are the products or services that you do?
CSM: The name is Machuma Accessories because my totem is Gwai Gumbi and chidawo ndi Machuma. I just took my totem and added accessories. We sell chuma earrings, ruoko bracelets, muhuro necklaces, anklets, gumbi bags, vambwa bags and designer clothes from the Naniso collection. We also offer styling services mainly to local music artists, models and celebrities like Mary Anibal, Tendex, Danai Clay, Nyasha Murada, Miss Charlotte Muziri, Othnell Mangoma, Taffie Matiure, Rosebud Tsikira and Nyaradzo Matanga.
MBD: How has it been since you started?
CSM: Starting Machuma Accessories in Zimbabwe has been a thrilling journey, filled with challenges and opportunities, ups and downs. We have struggled with sourcing eco-friendly materials, at times quitting, but we managed to stand out in a competitive market and overcome challenges by staying consistent.
Despite these setbacks, we have seen the growing demand for our designs, drawn inspiration from Zimbabwean and African cultures and empowering local artisans. With positive customer feedback and a growing community, we are excited to expand our product lines, increase our online presence and collaborate with more local artists.
MBD: How do you deal with competition that is out there?
CSM: Machuma Accessories focuses on its unique selling proposition, emphasizing sustainable materials and African-inspired designs. We prioritize quality craftsmanship, innovative marketing, and strong customer relationships. By staying true to our mission and values, we differentiate ourselves and build a loyal customer base.
MBD: What are your future plans?
CSM: Machuma Accessories is poised for exciting growth, with plans to launch an e-commerce website, expand internationally, and rebrand as Machuma Africa. We are planning to host an annual fashion show to showcase African style and creativity.
Additionally, we will continue to collaborate with local artisans to preserve traditional crafts and pass them on to the next generation, while offering training initiatives to empower young people with skills and mentorship to succeed in the fashion industry.
MBD: What is your driving force?
CSM: My driving force behind Machuma Accessories is a passion for showcasing African heritage and empowering local artisans, while promoting sustainable practices and community development. This allows us to have a sense of belonging through representation from Zimbabwean designer.
I am also motivated by a personal connection, honouring my late grandmother through the Naniso Collection. Ultimately, I aim to create unique, high-quality accessories and designs that blend tradition with modern style, while making a positive impact.
MBD: What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who are in the same line of work?
CSM: To fellow entrepreneurs in sustainable fashion and accessories, I would advise staying true to your mission, building strong relationships with local artisans and customers, and prioritizing quality craftsmanship. Innovate, adapt to trends and empower your community through knowledge sharing and support. Networking, collaboration and storytelling are also key to success.
With perseverance and dedication, you can build a business that makes a positive impact. It’s ok to ask for help and seeking mentorship. A Shona proverb goes “Rume rimwe harikombi churu”. There is power in collaboration.
MBD: What are some of your career highs?
CSM: Some notable career highlights at Machuma Accessories include launching the Naniso Collection, collaborating with creatives like Mary Anibal and Fungai Muzoroza and participating in prestigious programs like the AWE Academy for Women Entrepreneurs by the US Embassy and the So Creative accelerator program by the British Council.
I have also showcased my designs at prominent events like Soke, Fabrik Party and exhibited at Pop Up Stores at the Art Farm, German Society and Alliance Francaise.
I represented Zimbabwe as a diplomat at the Intercontinental Youth Connect speaking on sustainable fashion. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my journey as a sustainable fashion entrepreneur.
I stand as a commercial model who has worked with prominent brands like Edgars, Econet, Holiday Inn, and Stanbic Bank. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate on creative projects, such as Jah Prayzah’s “Mibvunzo” music video.
