Five luxury vehicles were seized from a Standard Chartered Bank employee accused of manipulating internal systems to steal US$2.3 million through fake accounts, police confirmed Thursday.
Cletas Tonderai Nyakambiro, 38, an internal control officer at the bank until his arrest, appeared in court last week. His alleged accomplice, Candrink Kupakuwana, remains at large.
Nyakambiro allegedly conspired with Kupakuwana in 2022 to divert tax payments into fraudulent accounts. US$2,293,483.84 + ZWL514,735.41 was allegedly stolen from Standard Chartered.
Police confirmed that they seized a Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Cruze, Toyota Aqua, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz S280, among 10 recovered items.
“The accused abused his position to alter beneficiary accounts and siphon funds. Investigations are ongoing to locate his accomplice,” alleged CID Spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri.
Nyakambiro made his first court appearance before Harare Regional Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka on May 24, 2025.
