
Sarah Bennet and MaCulwamahle Nkomo - two standout Zimbabwean sports administrators - have been honoured as winners in the 2026 African Women in Sports Initiative Impact in Sports Awards.
These awards, themed "Give to Gain," celebrate 20 African women advancing gender equality through sport, selected from 75 nominations across 17 countries by a 13-member continental panel.
The virtual ceremony on March 12, 2026, recognized trailblazers in sectors like administration, athlete leadership, and governance.
Bennet, a former national hockey player and current technical official with the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe, earned praise as "a respected contributor to the development of hockey whose leadership and dedication continue to elevate women’s participation and competitiveness."

Nkomo, who now heads the marketing and public relations portfolio at the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, was commended for her "influential role in advancing women’s boxing and creating opportunities for female athletes." This was during the time she was the board's provincial co-ordinator for Matatbeleland South.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee has celebrated the duo, stating in a congratulatory message: "Their hard work, passion and excellence are paving way for the future female sports stars in Zimbabwe. Congratulations ladies, you are lighting the path."

Founded around 2022 and with a membership of 700 from 29 countries, AWISI promotes gender equality, justice, and empowerment in diverse sports sectors. Its targeted programs and events focus on advocacy, networking, training, and recognition.
