Zimbabwe Tennis Stars Inspire the Next Generation

Zimbabwe tennis stars Benjamin and Courtney Lock are giving back to their homeland in a meaningful way. Through their Lock Brothers Foundation, the duo has built a tennis court at Marikopo Primary School near Dema Growth Point, aiming to nurture talent and instill life skills in local children.

The new clay court is set to be transformed into an all weather surface within a month, ensuring year round play. At the court’s official opening on Wednesday, the Lock brothers unveiled a full range of equipment including tennis rackets, balls, nets, and shoes to kickstart the programme.

Speaking at the launch, Benjamin Lock eemphasised the broader value of tennis.

“Tennis does not only teach one how to hit the ball over the net; it teaches resilience, focus, respect, and perseverance. These are life skills that children carry far beyond the court. For young people in Zimbabwe, opportunities like this can be truly life changing. A tennis court for us was a classroom for character, and that is what we hope to achieve here. To the children, this court belongs to you, use it to learn, compete, support one another, and enjoy the game of tennis.”

Courtney Lock highlighted that the initiative extends beyond providing equipment.

“We have gathered everything needed including rackets, tennis balls, nets so the children can start playing immediately. We are also bringing in top coaches, including five with Davis Cup experience, to scout talent. Coach Freeman Nyamunokora will be visiting regularly to monitor development and ensure the programme has a lasting impact.”

With this initiative, the Lock brothers aim not only to develop tennis skills but also to inspire a new generation of Zimbabwean youth, demonstrating that sports can be a powerful tool for growth, character building, and opportunity.
