Mutoko Prison has received a much-needed boost in its efforts to improve living conditions and support inmate rehabilitation, thanks to a donation from an unexpected source — a former inmate.
Hosiah Simbi, the founder of Kudanana Community Organisation, handed over a fully functional borehole and water tanks to the correctional facility. The donation is set to ease water challenges at the prison and boost key self-sufficiency projects such as gardening and fish farming.
Simbi, an ex-convict himself, has turned his life around and is now leading grassroots initiatives that fight drug abuse, HIV, and poverty through sustainable empowerment programmes. His organisation is also actively involved in youth outreach and reintegration support for former inmates.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu, who officiated the handover ceremony, applauded Simbi’s commitment to rehabilitation and giving back to society.
“It is encouraging to see someone who has been through the system now working with us to make our institutions better,” said Chihobvu. He also called on Commanding Officers to put the borehole to productive use, especially in light of the ongoing fight against food insecurity within correctional facilities.
Chihobvu raised alarm over rising drug and substance abuse among youths, which he said was driving crime levels. He urged more public-private partnerships to strengthen correctional rehabilitation and reintegration.
The event marked a rare but powerful moment of transformation — from convict to community builder.
