Halt in birth certificates issuance negatively affects people

In a development that may affect people who intend to obtain birth and death certificates for the deceased, the Civil Registry Department yesterday announced that technical challenges have resulted in it temporarily halting the issuance of the crucial documents.

In a Press statement yesterday, the department, however, said the documents will be issued manually in case of emergencies, adding that they will continue to give updates on progress on their social media platforms, namely Twitter handle, @CivilRegZim and the Facebook page: Civil Registry Department Zimbabwe.

“Issuance of national identity documents and e-passports has not been affected and members of the public are, therefore, free to visit their nearest registry offices and make their applications,” read the statement.

The statement further said that the department, which falls under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, is working on a permanent solution to these intermittent system challenges.

The Department rolled out a mobile registration exercise that ran from 1 April to 30 September with the aim of ensuring all citizens have access to the primary documents.

The initial target of the exercise was two million people.
