Here is a challenge.
Go into any pharmacy and just chill there for a while.
Eavesdrop a little Stop acting self-righteous. You know you always do this.
Eavesdrop with intent and you might just be amazed at the number of people walking in and asking for two particular types of medication.
A small pill called “blue” which acts as a sexual enhancer and “morning after” pills. The connection is obvious.
The same experiment works in any grocery store where up to four people in every 10 buying a beverage are buying energy drinks.
Most energy drinks are really a cocktail of caffeine and sugar in liquid form, designed to excite the body into continuous action.
They are probably great if you are going mountain climbing, running or cycling, but if you are going to be sitting most of the day, they are not exactly advised.
They are never a substitute for sleep.
Most people chugging these syrups could probably gain more from a few hours of rest.
Back to the pharmacy. Further investigation showed that the pill people are asking for enhances blood flow, increasing the duration of an erection.
Interesting that while I was in the pharmacy a man who looked to be in his 60s came in and requested it, as did two young men who were clearly under the age of 20.
Why anyone in their late teens would need any kind of enhancement of this nature is disturbing.
It is believed that they need it because they have multiple sexual encounters during the course of the day.
It raises a question of just how much damage these stimulants, sometimes used in combination, can cause to the body.
Andrew Ngoni ,22, said he was buying these drugs because he needed to “last longer” to impress his girlfriend, who pays his rentals.
“If I don’t perform, I can lose her,” he said.
Dennis Chimimba, 42, is married and a father of four. He said he was using the stimulator in order to “keep up with his young girlfriend.” The girlfriend is 19 years old and in college.
Both Andrew and Dennis do not have a medical reason for using this pill. They are using it for recreation and to support their sexual dalliances.
The majority of these sexual encounters are transactional in nature, hence the insistence on performance and competition.
The 60-something refused to be interviewed but upon following him, spotted was an elderly lady waiting for him outside the pharmacy
They stepped off as quickly as their elderly legs could carry them. Nosey antennae could not establish whether they were a bona-fide couple or not.
At a recent anti-drug abuse event, the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Anti-Narcotics communications team highlighted the dangers of using sexual stimulants especially among younger people.
“There is a serious risk of dependency. The human body learns to act in certain ways based on how it is socialized. Medication plays a big part in training the body. Reliance on sexual stimulants, especially among young people could compromise the function of their organs in the future,” a spokesman for the team said.
“Sexual stimulants should be used with a prescription from a medical practitioner and they are used as directed, not in this unregulated manner,” she said.
Medical practitioner Dr Simon Mundiya said there was a risk of damage to vital organs if stimulants were used extensively in this manner, without regulation.
“All medication should be taken based on a need ascertained by relevant observations and tests. Self-medication of this type is both reckless and unwise,” he said.
We advise people to tray exercise as a way to keep fit and to keep their bodies healthy and if they are having sex-related problems they should consult a medical practitioner,” he added.
A pastor with a local church, Minister Admire Mubango said the behavior of some members of society, particularly men, was going against Scriptural teaching and was leading to serious harm to society. He said the focus on sex at the expense of prayer and spiritual growth was causing society to lose its direction.
“When people spend money on pills in order to improve their performance in fornication, then we clearly have a problem. I hope they all suffer some damage so they can appreciate the error of their ways,” he said.
For now, though, it appears the fire and brimstone have not landed. The pills are still popping and the people are still chasing after their genitals.
It remains to be seen whether they can keep them up in the future or if they are only raising a standard in the moment to limp off the field forever in the near future.
